Spalding Battery Energy Storage System

The Spalding Project will deliver one of the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the world.

Battery Energy Storage Systems will play a key role in the UK’s drive to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. InterGen is seeking a co-investor to take up to 49% equity in their BESS project at Spalding, Lincolnshire which will have a final capacity of 550 megawatts for a 2 hour discharge duration ( 550 MW/2 hours, or 1100 MWh) with zero greenhouse gas emissions.

The first phase of the Spalding Project will be 300MW and operational by 2026.

Key facts

  • When completed, the project will operate in the UK’s electricity wholesale and balancing markets. It will also provide reserve and ancillary services to the National Grid, offering flexible and dynamic services to help ensure electrical grid stability.
  • The project is at an advanced stage of development and the operational lifespan is expected to be around 20 years with repowering potential to extend.
